As days passed, the fires expanded in a puzzling manner, affecting over 110 homes according to official reports, while some sources estimated the number to be more than 150.
Despite the best efforts of firefighting teams and emergency services, the fires continued to break out sporadically, spreading fear among residents, many of whom were terrified of losing both their homes and lives.

A Pause… Then an Unexpected Return
By early March 2025, the flames gradually subsided, giving residents and investigators a glimmer of hope. Yet, the relief was short-lived. In the early hours of March 2, the fires reignited with sudden intensity, leading to eight people suffering from smoke inhalation.
Emergency services reported that large crowds gathering around the burning sites hindered rescue operations, further complicating efforts to contain the blazes.
Caught between disbelief and fear, residents offered differing explanations: some believed a scientific cause must exist, while others suspected the involvement of supernatural forces, invoking longstanding cultural beliefs about spirits (known locally as jinn) and sorcery.
1- Possible Explanations
As the mystery deepened, officials and experts proposed several theories to explain the strange phenomenon, though many locals remained convinced that something beyond the natural world was at play.
2- Methane Gas Leakage
Libya’s Minister of Higher Education, Imran Al-Qeeb, suggested that a 3.5-magnitude earthquake might have caused cracks in the Earth's crust, releasing combustible methane gas. Under this theory, methane mixing with air could spontaneously ignite upon contact with a spark.
3- Electrical Failures or Heat-Related Incidents
Another logical theory points to potential faults within home electrical systems or the local power grid. However, the scattered timing and locations of the fires make a purely electrical explanation less convincing.
4- Deliberate Arson
Some speculate the fires might have been deliberately set by unknown actors, possibly motivated by political, economic, or social agendas. Yet, no arrests have been made, and no clear evidence has surfaced to support this theory so far.
5- Environmental and Natural Factors
Some scientists proposed that chemical reactions in dry soil conditions could lead to spontaneous combustion of organic materials. This theory could explain how fires started in isolated patches without a clear ignition source.
6- Supernatural Forces and Witchcraft
In a country where cultural traditions remain deeply rooted, some residents have turned to metaphysical explanations, believing the fires might be caused by acts of witchcraft or disturbances from jinn. The fires' erratic appearance - starting, stopping, and reappearing - has fueled beliefs in supernatural causes.
Ongoing Investigations… No Clear Answers Yet
As of now, Libyan authorities continue to investigate the bizarre fires, collaborating with specialists in geology, meteorology, and public safety. Firefighting and emergency teams remain on high alert, urging residents to exercise extreme caution.
Will scientific inquiry ultimately solve the mystery behind Al-Asabaa’s fires? Or will the town remain a symbol of one of the most enigmatic events in Libya’s recent history ?
